Indian Airlines Corporation was crated through Air Corporations Act on June 15, 1953 and was nationalized on August 1, 1953.  Eight domestic airlines, Deccan Airways, Airways India, Bharat Airways, Himalayan Aviation, Kalinga Airlines, Indian National Airways and Air Services of India and the Domestic wing of Air India, were merged to form the new domestic national carrier Indian Airlines Corporation.

Indian Airlines, together with its fully owned subsidiary Alliance Air, grew in to one of the largest regional airline systems in Asia with a fleet of 62 aircrafts and covering 75 destinations - 57 within India and 20 abroad. The Indian Airlines international network covers Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Qatar and Bahrain in West Asia, Thailand, Singapore, Yangon and Malaysia in South East Asia and Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Maldives in the South Asian sub-continent.

The Government of India, on March 1, 2007, approved the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines in to a new Company, National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL) was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 on March 30, 2007. The Certificate to Commence Business was obtained on May 14,  2007.

It has been decided that post merger, the new entity will be known as “Air India” while “Maharaja” will be retained as its mascot. The logo of the new airline will be a red colored flying swan with the “Konark Chakra” in orange placed inside it. The flying swan has been morphed from Air India’s characteristic logo “The Centaur” whereas the “Konark Chakra” was reminiscent of Indian’s logo.

In February 2011, the merger came into effect.
